Only a very short time ago, it seemed like the only food event round these parts was bumping into another poor soul at what is officially The World's Most Pathetic Farmer's Market (every Sunday morning outside the library). No longer. It's now all kicking off here in Peckham food-wise. Just last weekend, for example, no less a personage than Jay Rayner gave Peckham Refreshment Rooms a stonking review; I'll leave it to you to decide whether the fact that (according to Time Out) the "hipness quota really cranks up in the evening, attracting Peckham’s edgy [edgy?] art scene/boho crowd" is a plus or a minus. If such a crowd exists, you may find their presence difficult to reconcile with Vice's considered opinion that Peckham is now "Dalston without the cunts", but these Jamesian social distinctions are, sadly, beyond my grasp. The last time I was 'edgy' was when I was off my tits on billy whizz at a Toots and The Maytals' gig in the eighties. But back to the food: this weekend we've got the MUNCH food festival happening in Holly Grove Park (that's the tiny strip of green running along the side of Peckham Rye station): Meanwhile, 'neath the shadow of Skint Towers, the Frog on the Green is undergoing a transformation into a Pan Balkan Meze and Grill establishment - the Peckham Bazaar. At the moment it's in 'pop-up' mode on occasional weekends during this summer. Last weekend's menu read thusly: Pork souvlaki wrap with tsatsiki and pickled carrots £5 John (owner/chef) is cooking up an absolute storm. You should really get down there at the first chance. For this next weekend, he is ditching the Balkan theme though, and teaming up with the Big Mama of Peckham's food scene, Helen of Food Stories to hold a JERK PARTY!!! Amazingly, Helen will - AT THE SAME TIME - be running a stall at the aforementioned MUNCH, selling her own Jerk Marinade. This, mind you, while also running two blogs (here's the other one), writing a book, holding down a job and studying for a PhD. I'm knackered just writing that. Respect is most definitely due. All this lardbucket of lethargy can say is: ♫ ...Shake, shake, shake, senora, shake it all the time And while we're on the subject of pop-ups, the legendary Sally Butcher is hosting one of her regular Persepolis events at Anderson & Co this very night - keep a look-out for the next one. By the way, Sally's third book Snackistan is out this October. Finally, at least for the moment, the Comintern of the street food revolution A.K.A. KERB is, as I write, planning an invasion of the South: North of the river? I've shit it.

Aww bless ya, Tony! Peckham really is a very exciting place to eat right now. I have been working on my ability to be in two places at the same time for a while now. It was tricky at first but I've worked hard and...no okay so basically I'm selling my marinade during the day and then heading over to the JERK PARTY in the evening. The illusion is Shattered! Seriously though thank you for saying nice things and also for the African playlist. It will tickle the eardrums of the people of Peckham till the early morn.

Re John: it's about time he spread his wings! And you're still a multi-tasking-one-woman-dynamo!

Good to see you back posting! Glad to see Peckham being highlighted - was my "stomping" ground in the 1980s so fond memories. Had my first ever "proper" curry in Lordship Lane and fab bread pudding from a bakery next to Rye Lane station!

I lived here in the 80's too! Went away for a while, but had to come back. Just feels *right* to me. :0)

Looking back the foodie stuff probably wasn't that great but for a young lass from the West Coast of Scotland it was amazing :-) Many a good night out in the Montpelier and a pub a the tip of East Dulwich called the Clockwork Orange though I'm not 100% of that name :-)

Its always a joy when we get a fresh post from Skinty. You should be making £100k+ as a Guardian food writer. You are the new Nigella!

That's the more likely scenario Robin, truth be told. My make-up skills are for shit.

Thanks Sophie! I'm completely in accord that the Guardian should be paying me a shitload of spondulix. Can't understand what's holding them back. Not too sure, though, that Nigella would appreciate being lInked to me IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER.

Thank you Elizabeth; although you're being far too kind, it's much appreciated.

God, I remember visiting the Peckham 'farmer's market' a few years ago: the sense of disappointment was almost palpable. But you're right - Peckham's ace for food these days. Planning to check out the festival later today.

Although it is quite useful to have the woman who sells farm produce there. But, in comparison to the nearby (Saturday) Brockley Market, it's a sad joke I'm afraid.

I just had the pork souvlaki at what was previously Frog on the green now the Peckham bazaar). It was absolutely gorgeous. Barbequed pork smothered in delicious salady yoghurty sauce and wrapped in a delicious warm...erm...wrap. Also huge. Also cheap.
