blogs

Fort on Food One of our finest food writers; I love his elegant and lucid writing style.

Blood + Wasabi
is so hip you have to be dressed all in black just to be able to log on to it. It's the kitchen blog of Bincho, the Japanese yakatori restaurant.

Nueva Cocina
Steve Gale is a professional chef. This is his excellent and stylish blog .

Persepolis
If I was forced to name just three wonders of Peckham they would be the library, Khan's Bargain Ltd. and this place. Sally, who runs it, has recently created her own country - Veggiestan.

Food Stories
For some wicked recipes and where to eat in South London she's your gal. One of the first champions of the phenomenon formerly known as Meatwagon. And she's recently created this brilliant new blog: The London Review of Sandwiches.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman
Rocking Asian fusion since 1979.

Gin and Crumpets has a simple philosophy: if you can't drink it, eat it.

Hollow Legs A delight.

Cheese and Biscuits Chris Pople selflessly maxes out his credit cards at restaurants around London and beyond, annoying his fellow diners by photographing everything in sight, in order to bring you informative reviews.

Meemalee's Kitchen You are cordially invited to MiMi's kitchen. Don't blame me if you never leave.

food websites

Londonist The food section of this online magazine for the capital.

Urbanspoon London restaurants and reviews from critics and food bloggers.

Gojeeis a lovely site 'showing you curated recipes personalized to what you have'. It's a delight to use.

Great British Chefs Fifty plus chefs and their recipes.

Marky Market Every Wednesday and Friday this fine chap visits Smithfield and Billingsgate markets in the early hours. Order whatever you'd like the day before and he'll drop them off at your door. How cool is that?

lovefood is a recipe site with, at last count, more than 150 contributing chefs.

stonesoup A site about recipes with 5 ingredients. What's not to love?

eat the seasons A guide to which foods are in season.

Chowhound  You know how message boards are populated entirely by pedants and poltroons? Well not here. It's members are all clever, funny and attractive people - just like you.

Delia, Nigella and Jamie Say what you like about them, they are certainly all generous with their recipes.

The Guardian, The Independent and The Telegraph The online editions of these broadsheets are great for recipes and restaurant reviews. The Times is, sadly for the skint, behind a paywall.

BBC Food, Channel4 Food, ITV Food and the Good Food Channel Loads and loads of recipes, of course.

BBC Good Food
and Delicious  Some food magazines offer very little online in the way of recipes. These two are exceptions.

online shopping

You'll all have your chosen online supermarket site,so I won't bother listing those. Instead, some top class suppliers. Not really the thing if your completely skint, but have a look and treat yourself when you're able. I don't really need to shop online, because of living in London. But if I did, the following are the kiddies I'd use when I could afford to.

Square Mile There's now some stunningly good coffee roasters out there. But, to me, these guys still reign supreme. Treat yourself.

Forman & Field Launched in 2002, Forman & Field specialise in fresh, traditional British produce from small, independent producers.

Natoora French, Italian and British produce.

Gastronomica imports products from over 20 Italian producers and suppliers, and stocks over 200 cheeses, hams and other products.

Valvona & Crolla The online shop of Scotland's oldest Italian delicatessen, founded in 1934 and garlanded with praise.

Brindisa Unbelievably good Spanish produce. The hams. Oh my God, the hams.

R. Garcia & Sons Since 1957, long before Brindisa, Garcia & Sons have been supplying Londoners with top quality Spanish fare.

East London Steak Co. Superb quality beef and lamb. Onglet, bavette, porterhouse, short ribs, ox cheeks, pickled brisket, wing rib...

The Blackface Meat Company  Seasonal, well hung meat, from the 'wilds of Scotland'.

The Wild Game Co. supplies wild venison and game, 'fresh from the Highlands'.

S.J. Frederick & Sons  It's commonly held that poulets de Bresse are the best chickens in the world. Frederick's Label Anglais, bred from two old British breeds, Red Cornish and White Rock, are the pretenders to the throne. And about half the price.

The Cornish Fishmonger Fresh Cornish fish delivered in 24 hours.

The Fish Society aims to supply you with frozen fish which they say, because of their freezing methods, will give you the same eating experience as buying fish at the quayside and eating it straightaway.
